Day 3 - May 27: Start of School

Today we start school but our first class was cancelled due to our professor being ill. So we woke up late and decided to go out to find a breakfast place somewhere here. Shu, Eric, and I found a place that turned out to be part of a hotel that had a continental breakfast buffet. Little did we know that we had come at the end of service so our options were limited. It was a strange experience all in all. The waiters never came by and the juice/coffee area was stationed in what seemed like the middle of the food pick up window where waiters and bus boys kept walking by quickly - which made getting a drink feel like standing in the middle of their service. It was odd but it was only 160Kc (~$8) for everything.

So we only had one class for the day and it was pretty much an overview of everything we were to do while in Prague. After our class we had about 2 hours til we had to meet our professors for our Welcome Dinner at a place located about 30min away by tram.

Our first experience with the tram was quite interesting. We received forms to get a student monthly pass but figured we’d go to the ticket office for that another day. We also figured that you could pay once you got on the tram. We were very wrong. There was no place to pay on the tram so we figured it was an honor system type deal. Luckily a police man didn’t come onto the tram to check but we would have been fined 700Kc we found out from Vera (our program coordinator) later. How would we know?!

We had a wonderful Czech meal of meat and bread and beer - lots of beer. Our professors sat away from us but we had a great time anyways. Usually they rented out the entire hall for the program but since we were so small they only had 3 tables (of which we only used 2, barely). It was still pleasant and we managed to drunkenly figure out the tram home and buy a tram ticket this time!

May 25 - Day 1: Arrival to Prague

The architecture is so beautiful here. After waiting for over an hour on my plane before I took off and then being on my plane for 8 hours. I waited for my friend Shu Zhu as he was arriving from a connecting flight from Moscow. We met the daughter of a FAMU professor who showed us to a taxi. We passed through so many open green fields and cute houses. Prague is such a unique place!

When we arrived at our dorm, we met up with Violet Overn who is my suitemate. Turns out that my roommate never came, she turned down the program (what?!). So the three of us had a great italian feast for lunch (with wine) that only cost us about $10 each! We’re in love with how cheap good food is here compared to NYC prices. We went exploring and found Palladium (the huge “American” mall). It has so many American stores and is pretty much set up like an American mall that it shocked us all. After our shopping excursion, in which we bought ethernet cables, an ionic brush to “smooth” out our hair that did the opposite and we returned, and basic shampoo/lotion/conditioner/gel toiletries, we came back to our dorm and pretty much passed out from being jet lagged. It was fun seeing the city but the 6 hour difference got to us (and the wine).

Hey guys,

SO I will be on tumblr a lot more because I will be blogging my adventures in Prague! I leave Friday and am excited to travel to a new country. I really have no idea what to expect when I land there. My goal is to not be taken or pick pocketed while there. With that said, if you guys don’t here from me call the US embassy, or Liam Neeson.

But in all seriousness, I cannot wait to go. I will be studying under NYU Tisch School of the Arts’s summer study abroad program for 35mm filmmaking :) I’m very excited to use film because there is really nothing like it - although digital cameras are getting pretty close…

Check in here for updates, I will be posting pictures/videos/you name it to document my time there. I got to go finish packing but follow my travels!!
